In the early 1970s, Poggenpoel was working as a technical officer at the University of Cape Town. During this time he, alongside John Parkington, discovered the Diepkloof rock shelter, which they subsequently excavated over a number of years. He is a specialist in faunal identification with an interest in fish taxonomy. In 2008 he began work as the Field Director at Cape Archaeological Survey.]
