General note

Additional information

[Source - Chloe Rushovich for FHYA, 2020, transcription of KwaZulu-Natal Museum database extracts: J. Wintjes (22/11/2019): This accession forms part of the first batch of items written into the Accessions
Register by F. W. Fitzsimons around the time the museum officially opened in 1904. These items aren't
all dated, and if they are dated they aren't listed in chronological order of acquisition (pp.0-28 of
'Ethnology Book 1'). This accession is undated and could therefore have been received into the
collection somewhere between 1890 (when Mayr arrived in Natal) and 1904. The earliest date I have so
far seen for a Mayr item in the collection is 1897.
A note in a document written by Kathleen Mack (I think) in 1989, pasted at the front of the Accessions
Register (Ethnology Book 1), indicates that the museum director Dr Warren may have given purchasing
authority to people like Mayr, who was the source of a large number of items.
This Accession has been selected as part of the Mayr series by the Five-Hundred Year Archive.
